During the Venetian Period, this beautiful town was surrounded by water and only accessible by what is now known as the ‘Land Gate’. This is where your journey will begin. Our knowledgeable, licensed tour guide will unravel the thread of history starting from Nauplius, the ancient hero of the city, up until the more recent events of the 19th century. Through his vivid storytelling, relive the stories of pirates and noblemen that used to live in the city and get to know the story of Ioannis Kapodistrias, the assassinated Governor of the First Hellenic Republic, who shaped modern-day Greece.
As the tour continues, you will make your way to Syntagma Square, home to an ancient Ottoman mosque. If you have worked up an appetite, indulge in a sweet treat from an Italian Gelateria. As the tour comes to a close, your guide will lead you to the rocky hillside of the Acropolis of Nafplion. When you reach the face of the rock, take a look at the ever-sleeping lion, carved directly into the bedrock to commemorate the demise of Bavarian soldiers that died of typhoid fever between 1833-4.
